CHAPTER IV.
The morning appointed for the election of
the council of state was passed by Elvira in the
most intense anxiety. For herself, she had no
wish to be a Queen — nay, perhaps she trembled
at the thought; but when she saw how earnestly
it was desired by her father, and thought of
the bitterness of his disappointment should she
be rejected, her eyes filled with tears, and she
felt ready to make any sacrifice to promote his
happiness.
